Campaign Action
Oh, Kansas. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Governor Sam Brownback’s plan to disenfranchise anybody who isn’t old and white from voting in the state of Kansas took a step back yesterday, when a judge ruled that Kansas cannot require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote at DMVs.
U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson ruled that the state's proof-of-citizenship requirements likely violate a provision in the National Voter Registration Act that requires only "minimal information" to determine a voter's eligibility. She ordered Kansas to register thousands of voters whose paperwork is on hold because they did not comply with the requirement. But she put her preliminary injunction on hold until May 31 to give the state a chance to appeal.
The state immediately said it would appeal. Unless a higher court halts Robinson's order before the end of the month, it would take effect then, clearing the way for those residents to cast a ballot in the upcoming federal elections.
After Republicans require photo IDs for voter registration, they then close those DMVs, making it even harder to get the stupid ID proof that the Republicans claimed to want in the first place. Here’s a Republican think tank discussing their voter ID laws:
“There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.
"That's some catch, that Catch-22," he observed.
"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.”
Kansas will appeal because they are so very very concerned about voter fraud. This ruling will potentially end the bullshit suspension of 37,000 registration statuses of potential voters.
