Their candidate has made many a lunatic comment, but the outcry over his latest utterance seems to have prompted the fastest response yet from Donald Trump’s campaign team.
Trump caught a rain of Twitter brimstone Tuesday after saying of Hillary Clinton in a speech: “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know.”
Soon, there was this:
Campaign Action
Like a lot of the campaign’s defenders, this one had the stench of "Stop quoting our candidate verbatim. It makes him look loony.”
Other defenders suggested he really meant armed rebellion to keep the Supreme Court in line, not assassination of Clinton. And, of course, of course, of course, there were those calling Trump’s comment a joke and asking where people have put their sense of humor.
This clarification must mean Clinton's Secret Service detail won’t have to push past Donald Trump's Secret Service detail to question him over this threat, since they now know he was just funnin’.
No doubt Trump’s team would have a snappy response if one or more of the candidate’s followers who is more of a lunatic than he is didn’t take his comment as a joke and made an attempt on Clinton’s life.
Are hundreds of GOP members of Congress and state legislatures who are still backing Trump ready to join Sen. Susan Collins yet and announce they won’t back Trump? Or are they determined to stick with him while he drags all of them through the electoral mud, chained behind his limo?
