To understand and resist Trump we have to think differently. He is not a politician, he's a real estate mogul and we have to learn to speak his language.
Trump is purposely giving us outrage fatigue. It's his negotiating style and it's how he wins. He opens with something totally unacceptable. Like his cabinet nominees. Same thing with the wall, NATO, Russia, China, deportations, Muslim bans. These are his opening bids in a negotiation. We need to reject them all.
When Trump the real estate mogul starts bidding on a property he'll say "It's worth nothing. What will you pay me to take it off your hands" while he waits for you to make a counteroffer. That's how he gets his best deal. What's different here is we can't walk away from the table. Not for at least four years.
We are used to politicians who make policy proposals they actually want and in fact I'd say President Obama's biggest weakness was starting negotiations with what he wanted and not stretching for more. Trump is a real estate guy and we have to play his game. We, meaning Republicans and Democrats who actually care about this country, need to make counteroffers to all of his crazy ideas. We need to speak his language.
