Received this e-mail today from Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley’s (D. OH) gubernatorial campaign:
The other night, 60 Minutes and the Washington Post broke a huge story about the opioid crisis in America. It turns out the man Donald Trump recently named to be his drug czar -- former Congressman Tom Marino -- had actually helped push legislation that made it harder for the government to take action against drug distributors for their role in the opioid epidemic.
This legislation was something drug distributors had been asking Congress to pass for years. These companies actually worked to undermine efforts to stop the flow of opioids on the black market!
This is outrageous. We need to hold drug companies and distributors accountable -- not weaken the government’s ability to go after them!
I believe Ohio can be at the forefront of the effort to make enablers of the opioid crisis take responsibility -- especially in the absence of leadership from the federal government. Add your name if you believe the next governor of Ohio must hold drug companies and distributors accountable for the devastation they’ve caused.
As governor, I pledge to make drug companies and distributors pay for what they did. For years, drug companies pushed opioid painkillers on doctors and patients, while distributors refused to stanch the flow of drugs to the black market.
By the time the medical community realized how addictive these painkillers were, it was too late. Hundreds of thousands of people were hooked, and when their prescriptions ran out, they turned to synthetic opioids and heroin. Now those people are dying at a rate of over 140 a day.
I won’t make the same mistake Governor Kasich and Attorney General DeWine did -- waiting too long to take action. From Day 1, I will make addressing and ending the opioid crisis a priority -- no matter what the federal government does.
As governor, I won’t let drug distributors act with impunity. They need to pay. Add your name if you believe Ohio needs a governor who will hold drug companies and distributors accountable.
