Received this e-mail today from Superintendent Tony Evers’ (D. WI) gubernatorial campaign:
Friend,
Last week, I wrote to you about being the lone vote against Scott Walker’s attempt to chill free speech on University of Wisconsin campuses. The fact that Governor Walker and his appointees were so willing to disregard the First Amendment of our Constitution is yet another example of his lack of fitness for office.
Sadly, he has this in common with President Trump. Like Walker, Trump recently questioned the right to free speech and openly asked whether the press should be able to “write whatever they want.”
Sign here if you agree with me that the right to free speech is an important American value that we must protect from desecration for political reasons by those in power >>
The Founding Fathers saw the right to free speech as an essential part of American life. Without the right to express ourselves, America would cease to be the country that we all grew up learning about in school.
Walker and Trump are not only in the wrong here — they are expressing a fundamentally unpatriotic idea, and I will not tolerate it without using my voice to fight back. The open questioning of our fundamental rights is extremely dangerous and has been the beginning of a slippery descent into tyranny for many other nations. I refuse to allow that to happen in Wisconsin or the United States of America.
Stand up for the First Amendment and sign here to tell Governor Walker and Donald Trump that all Americans have the inalienable right of free speech >>
Onward,
Tony
