Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Chris Murphy’s (D. CT) re-election campaign:
Today, I joined up with Senator John Cornyn to introduce a breakthrough bill on background checks. To put it bluntly, this is a big deal.
Along with three other Republicans and three Democrats we introduced the Fix NICS Act, a bill that will help make sure criminal history and domestic violence records are submitted to the national background check system.
Right now, too many states and federal agencies don't submit these records to the background check system, allowing lots of people to buy guns who shouldn’t be able to. Our bill will keep dangerous people from buying guns and it will save lives.
Add your name as a Citizen Co-Sponsor of our Fix NICS Act and help me show my Republicans colleagues just how much support we have for getting this bill passed.
It’s no secret that I believe much more needs to be done. But this is a watershed moment for our movement.
The Fix NICS Act is the most important piece of bipartisan gun violence prevention legislation since Manchin-Toomey. And it shows that it’s possible for Congress to find common ground on this issue, despite the gun lobby’s best efforts to use it as a wedge.
Senator Cornyn and I couldn’t be more different. He’s a stalwart Texas Republican, a guy who has an A+ rating from the NRA. I’m a New England progressive and arguably the gun lobby’s number one target in Congress. Yet we were able to come to the table and find a way to work together so that we could do something to make our constituents safer.
Help me show Congress that coming together on this issue is the right thing to do. Add your name as a Citizen Co-Sponsor of the Fix NICS Act.
Far too often after a horrific shooting, we find out that the perpetrator shouldn’t have been able to buy a gun. If we can close the loopholes in our background check system, if we can make sure that these dangerous people can’t get their hands on weapons, I know that we can save lives.
Today we’re one step closer to doing that. Let’s get it done.
Every best wish,
Chris Murphy
U.S. Senator, Connecticut
