As the second week of Obamacare enrollment starts today, the momentum is fantastic. The first week had record-breaking sign-ups. On top of that, Tuesday night's elections were a profound statement by voters that they want the law not just to be kept, but to be improved.
A remarkable 4 out of 10 Virginians in an early exit poll said health care was their top issue in a race that saw Democrat Ralph Northam, the current lieutenant governor, handily defeat Republican Ed Gillespie to become Virginia's next governor. And in Maine, voters in a landslide backed Obamacare Medicaid expansion, which their governor had vetoed on five separate occasions.
As Democrats now look to the 2018 midterms that will decide control of the House, Senate and key governorships across the country, they can begin to more confidently embrace the law that’s covering 20 million Americans and that emerged politically stronger after surviving months of concentrated Republican repeal attacks.
"We have an opportunity to send a very clear signal to anyone who is spending time and money opposing the ACA," said Jonathan Schleifer of the Fairness Project, which poured funding into the Maine ballot measure campaign and is trying to boost lookalike Medicaid initiatives in states such as Utah and Idaho. "What is not unique to Maine is the support for ACA [and] the enthusiasm for expanding coverage. I think Maine is a great bellwether for the rest of the country."

The last few days should be sending a very clear message to Republicans—as if the massive resistance that brought Trumpcare down wasn't enough. Health care is a powerful issue and the incessant efforts of Republicans to get rid of it are finally backfiring with voters. With Trump leading the charge, no wonder.
The point is, keeping up this momentum for Obamacare is the thing that will save it. It might be the thing that helps us get a Democratic House next year. So we've got five weeks to make that happen, to finally get to the point where we're not debating whether Obamacare should still exist, but how we build on it to get truly universal and affordable health care in this country.
You can help, by joining the Open Enrollment Street Team volunteers helping Get America Covered. The more people who sign up, the harder it will be for Trump and the Republicans to take coverage away from millions.
