Received this e-mail today from former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director, Richard Cordray’s (D. OH) gubernatorial campaign:
Dear Friend —
Our campaign is focused on the kitchen table issues — the challenges that we share, no matter our background or politics. And as we all do what we can to provide for our families, there’s a growing concern that I know is on many people’s minds: how to find and keep a job in a rapidly-changing economy.
In a recent discussion with Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, Governor Kasich accurately referred to this looming crisis as a “tsunami” of job disruption that will require a workforce ready to take on jobs that demand a new skillset, and require advanced training and technological expertise.
I couldn’t agree more with how urgent this issue is for our state. But we cannot prepare the next generation of workers to succeed if we refuse to fully fund our most powerful tool: our education system. We’re asking our teachers to prepare young people for jobs that we can’t even imagine yet — while our legislators shrink school budgets and educators struggle to make ends meet. Long-underfunded schools across Ohio are being put in impossible positions, and administrators are being asked to do even more with far less.
If we don’t get serious about investing in education and workforce development, our children will pay the price. Add your name and show your support for doing whatever it takes to ensure good jobs are within every Ohioan’s reach.
This economic shift will affect our entire state — and many families are already feeling the impact. We have unemployed and underemployed workers trying to gain a foothold in a wave of jobs that require new technological fluency to stay competitive. We need an infusion of funding for workforce retraining programs to get them back on their feet.
And we can’t let these jobs be relegated just to Columbus or the major cities — we need to expand workforce training across the entire state. Everyone deserves the economic security that allows them to plan for their future, from paying for college tuition, to putting a down payment on a home, to saving for retirement.
We need to invest in our workers today so that they can be ready for the jobs of tomorrow. It’s time for more than talk — working families deserve real results.
Add your name today: it’s time to invest in Ohio workers.
Yours,
Rich Cordray
