I am a New Yorker, community organizer, and non-profit leader. I’m not a career politician. I am proud of my Long Island roots, international work, and uniquely American story.
My grandparents were immigrants who moved to Long Island to escape the Russian revolution and build a better life for their children. Inspired by their example, I have spent my entire career fighting for working families both at home and abroad.
I have forged partnerships between nonprofits, government, and businesses to lobby for paid family leave, improved healthcare access, and government transparency. I’ve worked to restore economically depressed communities around the world, helping farmers use technology to negotiate prices and grow their businesses and holding the use of international aid funds more accountable.
While serving as a UN Women’s Global Champion, I started the #IAmParent campaign to bring attention to and share stories about the need for paid parental leave. My current representative, Peter King, has voted against that repeatedly -- and that’s not all.
King voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would have left 74,000 people in our district without care. He voted to allow coal companies to dump waste into our waters. Whatever the issue at hand may be, he is on Trump’s side.
In the wake of the 2016 election, I founded the New York’s 2nd District Democrats group. We’ve grown to nearly 2,500 Long Islanders involved in grassroots politics: making phone calls, registering voters, and engaging our communities to best effect change.
More than half of our Congressional representatives are millionaires who don’t represent middle-class American families, and only 19% of Congress is female. To change Congress, we need to change the people we send to Washington to serve us.
