Senate Republicans made themselves look like asses. They were given an explanation. Nevertheless, they persisted.
“Do you feel bad, little lady? Are you sorry for what you did? Here—just in case you aren’t, I’m going to patronize and bore you into submission.”
“We all” obviously haven’t “been chastened a little bit,” because Cornyn delivered that gem of a line in the middle of a lecture about why Senate Republicans were right to silence Elizabeth Warren for reading Coretta Scott King’s letter opposing Jeff Sessions. It seems an awful lot like Cornyn is trying to “chasten” Warren all over again by droning on about this when Warren is not even allowed to participate in Senate debate. Actually, make that: Cornyn is trying to chasten all Democrats:
We’re at a pretty challenging time in our nation’s history when many people who were surprised and disappointed at the last election are unwilling to accept the results of that election and the verdict of the American people.
The technical results of that election and the verdict of the American people were two different things, which is sort of the problem.
I can only hope that after the passage of time they will return to their senses and they will agree that no one is well served by this race to the bottom in terms of decorum, in terms of rhetoric, in terms of how we treat one another, and that the American people are better served when we treat each other with civility and respect, and that we don’t make personal attacks against senators because of the positions that they take.
As regards matters of decorum and rhetoric and how we treat one another, I would refer you, sir, to the Twitter feed of your party’s president. I would refer you, sir, to the past eight years of viciously personal, partisan Republican obstruction. And I would point out, sir, that it is not a personal attack to note that the positions Jeff Sessions has taken over the years have been racist positions any more than it would be a personal attack on Jeffrey Dahmer to note that he had killed some people.
