Received this email yesterday from former Middleton Mayor Dan Drew’s (D. CT) gubernatorial campaign:
Friends --
What Donald Trump did this morning was bigoted. It is not normal. It does not represent the America we love.
Trump's values of hatred do not reflect who we are. They do not reflect our values. And his bigotry certainly doesn’t reflect the America we want our children to grow up in. Instead of embodying our hopes and aspirations or what is best about the American spirit, instead of fighting for the wellbeing of the many, of standing up for those who need our help, he wants to divide, intimidate, and make us afraid.
We are better than this. Together we have the capacity to build the kinds of communities and the kind of country that lift all of us up. That don’t leave people behind because they weren’t born rich, or happen to get sick, or because of their race or gender or sexual orientation.
We are better than this. We must fight for all Americans. That’s who we are.
By discriminating against transgender service members – men and women who have given far more to our country than he ever has – President Trump has proven once again that he is exactly the sort of unpatriotic bully we saw him to be during the campaign when he attacked a federal judge of Mexican heritage and a Muslim Gold Star mother.
I can't think of anything less patriotic than refusing someone the right to serve because of who they are. His latest ban marks a major step backwards for our country.
We, the American people, must stand up for all people.
It is our duty as Americans to speak out against this senseless bigotry, and against the divisive, immoral political evil behind it.
For those who are looking for ways to help right now, here are some nonprofit organizations that are working to protect trans rights who could use our support today:
The Connecticut TransAdvocacy Coalition
National Center for Transgender Equality
Transgender Law Center
Lambda Legal
Human Rights Campaign
The American Civil Liberties Union
If you can make a contribution to any of these groups today, please consider doing so, because the President’s assault on the LGBTQ community just made their jobs that much harder and more important.
Please speak out on social media, and to your friends and family, about how important it is for us to stand against intolerance and bigotry.
Donald Trump thinks he can divide us on civil rights because he doesn’t understand the American spirit. He does not represent our values. He thinks we are base, cruel, selfish, and hateful, because that's how he is. We need to stand together and prove him wrong.
Sincerely,
Dan
