White nationalist and fascist Christopher Cantwell gained national notoriety when a Vice News report on the Charlottesville protests highlighted his threatening speeches and belligerent swagger during the protests and their violence.
He gained more fame after the same furious, belligerent bald man who bragged "we'll fucking kill these people if we have to" and "a lot more people are going to die here" learned that law enforcement was looking for him and filmed himself, in tears, explaining that he didn't really mean those things–he was just trying to look like a tough guy. Or something. Whatever.
We, and he, now know the specifics of why law enforcement has been searching for him: It was for a photographed incident in which he pepper-sprayed one of the counter protesters he had been threatening to perhaps kill. And yep, they're not just "looking for him." It's a warrant for his arrest. Four of them, in fact!
“I thought that spraying that guy was the least damaging thing I could do,” he added. “In my left hand I had a flashlight. My other option, other than the pepper spray, was to break this guy’s teeth. O.K.? And I didn’t want to do that. I just wanted him to not hurt me.” [...]
“Tomorrow I’m more than likely going to find myself in a cage facing decades in prison,” he wrote. “It is entirely possible that this will be the last time you hear from me.”
He went from "a lot more people are going to die here" to expressions of fear and self-pity at a pretty good clip, even for a Nazi. Cantwell also says he'll turn himself in, but it's unclear why he's not, ya know, already doing that.
At least two of the warrants are related to felony charges, so while it’s not clear he’ll really be spending “decades” in prison, he definitely has reason to be a sad, sad fascist.
