I remind people that Murphy started as a safety with the Packers when undrafted out of Colgate, spent a number of years with the DC football team (with a racist name) including going to two Superbowls, two Pro Bowls, and serving as the team’s Player representative (NFL Players Association). While doing that he earned both an MBA and a law degree. After retiring he went on to be athletic director first at his alma mater (Colgate) and then at Northwestern, before taking over the Packers which is the only NFL franchise owned by the community.
I am quoting the complete statement, which can be found on the Packers' website:
"It's unfortunate that the President decided to use his immense platform to make divisive and offensive statements about our players and the NFL. We strongly believe that players are leaders in our communities and positive influences. They have achieved their positions through tremendous work and dedication and should be celebrated for their success and positive impact. We believe it is important to support any of our players who choose to peacefully express themselves with the hope of change for good. As Americans, we are fortunate to be able to speak openly and freely."
Following the Twitter feed of former Kossack Shaun King, we should expect a significant number of NFL players to show their displeasure with Trump’s tweets this Sunday. He has said that over 100 players plan some sort of protest, but there is more, as you will see here:
It is not clear that we will see protests on TV:
And there are some owner also trying to undercut the reaction by the players:
If the networks do NOT show the players protesting, I am sure there will still be lots of video taken by people in the stands.
Stay tuned.
