For a professed Washington outsider who repeatedly claims to know nothing about Mike Flynn’s issues or the general topic of Trump Russia to begin with, Pence took the very interesting tack of having his newly hired private attorney, Richard Cullen, meet personally with Robert Mueller, Cullen’s former co-worker at the Justice Department, last June. Politico:
Vice President Mike Pence’s outside lawyer met privately with special counsel Robert Mueller at Pence’s request last summer, according to a person familiar with the meeting.
The meeting, which has not been previously reported, was held at Pence’s request to express his willingness to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation, the person said.
“It isn’t always done but when a lawyer represents somebody who he anticipates the prosecutors may want to talk to and show that he wants to cooperate, that would be normal,” said William Jeffress, the attorney who represented Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, during the Valerie Plame CIA leak investigation.
It will be interesting to see how Pence justifies his out and out lies. Or maybe he won’t have to, maybe Manafort and Flynn will both flip and the Pence investigation will go down a different path. It’s all speculative at this point.
