The SpaceX Falcon Heavy test mission has concluded, but the iconic images and videos of Elon Musk’s midnight cherry Tesla Roadster with (dummy) Starman at its wheels and music by David Bowie, will linger in our collective conscience long after the Roadster has slipped the surly bonds of Earth and headed into space. After a 5-hour trip around Earth through the Van Allen radiation belts region last night, Starman is now on a trajectory towards Mars and the Asteroid belt.
Here is a selection of images and videos created by SpaceX enthusiasts around the world, with music by David Bowie.
We start with a video montage of the mission, including some animations by SpaceX, set to “Starman” by David Bowie -
Next, the trip around Earth with some out-of-this world views, set to David Bowie's "Life on Mars" -
Here is a video of SpaceX's Starman live feed with a beautiful choir performance of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" -
Lastly, a mesmerizing front seat view in a time-lapse video of the orbits around Earth -
Here is the animation from SpaceX, released the day before the launch, set to “Life on Mars” -
Here is Elon Musk’s tweet last night about the trajectory of the roadster and Starman — it will now orbit the Sun between Earth and the Asteroid belt. With an orbital period of nearly 2.4 years, Starman should pass close to Earth again in 12 years.
Goodbye and Bon Voyage. And don’t worry about us — we will muddle along and come visit you one day.
In case you are wondering why we don’t see the rocket behind the roadster, the car is positioned like this on the final stage rocket.
