The West Hollywood City Council will vote tonight on a resolution to recommend permanently removing Trump’s star on the Walk of Fame.
"The City Council will consider adopting a resolution urging the Los Angeles City Council and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove President Donald J. Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, due to his disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country," reads the agenda item for the Monday meeting.
The resolution states that the Los Angeles City Council and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce are jointly responsible for the Walk of Fame and that this is only a recommendation to the responsible entities:
The addition of new stars and the maintenance of existing stars are handled by different entities. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is responsible for only the addition of new stars to the Walk of Fame. Since the Walk of Fame is a public sidewalk and is the property of the City of Los Angeles, the City has the ultimate responsibility for the condition and maintenance of the Walk of Fame.
A previous attempt to remove Bill Cosby’s star was rebuffed by the the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, stating that it didn’t remove stars over backlash and citing historical landmark status. However, Cosby’s infamy pales in comparison to Trump’s. The resolution specifically lists the following as disqualifying:
- several instances of his treatment of women
- separating children from their parents at the border
- denying Russian election interference and refusing to hold Russian accountable
- denying climate change and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord
- his attempt to exclude transgender people from the military
- planning to pay for child detainment with HIV/AIDS funding
So if the W. Hollywood resolution passes tonight, it will be interesting to see whether the two responsible entities will take what appears to be an unpresidented act 😏
The article in The Hollywood Reporter has been updated to state that the resolution passed unanimously!
