Fox News’ Laura Ingraham has had to walk back her comments about how “In some parts of the country, it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn't exist anymore” because “massive demographic changes have been foisted on the American people.” Ingraham’s walk-back didn’t come because liberals objected to the blatant racism (drawing objections from liberals was doubtless part of the point), but because white supremacists, including former KKK leader David Duke, got a little too excited about it.
“A message to those distorting my views, including all white nationalists and one racist freak who’s name I won’t mention,” she said. “You do not have my support. You don’t represent my views and you are antithetical to the place I hold dear. The purpose of last night’s angle was to point out the rule of law, secure borders, is something that used to bind our country together.”
Translation: Crap, I didn’t know that when I blew that dog whistle, the biggest ugliest dogs would come running to lick my hands in full view of the world. I thought they’d just get all excited over there, without making it obvious I was the one with the whistle.
She continued:
“Despite what some may be contending, I made explicitly clear that my commentary had nothing to do with race or ethnicity,” she continued. “But rather a shared goal of keeping America safe and her citizens safe and prosperous. Furthermore, as I have said repeatedly on the show, merit-based immigration does wonders for our country’s economy, our way of life, and how we define our country.”
Riiight. “Massive demographic changes” related to immigration but having nothing to do with race or ethnicity. Come on now. Proud racists heard you. Anti-racists heard you. That was you over there with the dog whistle, Laura Ingraham. Don’t try to pretend it wasn’t.
