Fortunately the scene in Lafayette Park was relatively incident free today. “Unite the Right 2: Electric Boogaloo” turned out to be mostly a flop for the white supremacists who showed up as they were vastly outnumbered by counterprotesters who had their own permit to assemble. I am both relieved that there was little violence and extremely proud of my spiritual hometown. The DC that I know and love showed up in force to reject the hate. I mean, would you choose to show up in a city that where African Americans outnumber Caucasian Americans for the purpose of proclaiming “White Civil Rights”? I’m just saying, not the brightest of bulbs there.
But first, a word from our sponsors ...

I was so happy to get home today to read this from The Washington Post:
A short and sparsely attended white nationalist rally broke up late Sunday as police ushered the attendees into white vans and drove them away from a crowd of thousands of angry protesters in downtown Washington.
The rally’s end followed a day in which large numbers of police officers sought — successfully, for the most part — to keep the two sides from clashing in a repeat of last year’s deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.
The small band of demonstrators at the “Unite the Right 2” rally, who numbered about two dozen, were being transported to the Rosslyn Metro station, a Fairfax County official said. From there, they would take a train to Vienna, where they would be greeted by county police who could escort them to their cars if necessary.
Make no mistake, this is a helluva first step. We absolutely need to make this hate go away. But there is more work to be done, especially with the current administration. Elections mean things, they matter. If we can help organize this rejection of hate into votes, we might just be able to turn the tide. That is the all important next step here.
Today was a good day. We needed it but we need more. We need to send the clear message that this hate has no place in civil society. We need to send people to Congress who will not be afraid to call out this racist president, Mr “very fine people on both sides” himself. It is time to stand up and be counted at the ballot box.
Let’s get to work!
Oh, and speaking of DC, check this out … ‘I wanted to be big’: The legend of Cool ‘Disco’ Dan
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

Captain Frogbert in the Pundit Roundup perfectly describes the way the American Right is dragging us all into hell, and our reluctance to face the depths of their nature.
from SandraLLAP:
This comment, by ApostleofCarlin, was posted today to a wonderful diary from a new user, a professor of Holocaust Studies. The diary was about the dismay the diarist was feeling over the attitudes of a number of his/her current students, such as one who had said, “None of this is my fault. Why should I feel bad?”
The diary made it to the rec list, and received many thoughtful comments grappling with this unfortunate situation, but I felt that the comment I've linked to here addressed this matter absolutely perfectly.
