Earlier this week, we learned that Democratic candidates overall had outraised their GOP counterparts by about $80 million ($252 to $172 million), fueled in part by an insanely good third quarter. Now The Economist is giving us another layer of detail on where that third quarter money actually went in the House races and who it came from. Democratic donors didn't simply pour the most money into the House's most competitive districts in Q3, they also dwarfed Republican donations in GOP-held districts.
Even in “GOP-held districts” (to the right), Democratic candidates took in over 60 percent of the third quarter donations. In addition, Democratic candidates received 78 percent of the Q3 donations in “competitive districts,” significantly outpacing the 38 percent share they received in those districts during the third quarter in 2014.
Overall, the 2018 Democratic fundraising figures for Q3 outpace and even dwarf those in nearly every category for both 2016 and 2014, with the exception of Democratic held districts. In some ways, it makes sense since most of the competitive districts this year are are in GOP territory. But leading “GOP-held districts” with 60-plus percent of donations … damn.
