The Yanks Air Museum is located in Chino, California. In 1973, this collection of aircraft began with the acquisition of the Beech Staggerwing and since then the museum has acquired more than 200 aircraft. Many of the aircraft displayed at the museum are one-of-a-kind (usually meaning the last remaining example) and most of them can be flown (notice the dip pans under the airplanes). Shown below are some of the multiple engine aircraft which are on display.
C-47 Skytrain
The C-47 is the military adaptation of the DC-3 commercial airliner which was introduced in 1936. It was used extensively during World War II and was affectionately nicknamed the Goony Bird.
Grumman C-64 Albatross (UH-16)
Introduced in 1949 as an air-sea rescue flying boat, a total of 466 of these aircraft were produced. The Albatross, an improvement on the design of the Grumman Mallard, was developed to land in open ocean situations.
G-21A (JRF) Goose
This eight-seat twin engine utility amphibian was first produced by Grumman in 1938. It has a top speed of 201 mph, a cruising speed of 191 mph, and a range of 360 miles. According to the Museum display:
“In the 1930s the elite of Manhattan and Long Island, New York required an aircraft that would provide them amphibious transport into the city. Grumman was commissioned to build the G-21 ‘Goose’ to suit their needs.”
A total of 345 airplanes were built, and of these, only 30 became private or corporate flying yachts. With World War II, the Goose served as reconnaissance, rescue, and training aircraft.
UC-40A Electra Jr.
This eight-seat transport was first produced by Lockheed in 1936. It has a top speed of 230 mph, a cruising speed of 213 mph, and a range of 950 miles. This was Lockheed’s first twin-engine aircraft. When introduced it was the fastest transport airplane in the world. A total of 130 were built.
