So, way back when I was a new writer here, there was this sort-of regular series hosted primarily by cskendrick and mkkendrick. It ran from roughly 2006-2008 and I wrote four diaries under the tag, just as I was starting my tenure here at Top Comments. Not sure who here may remember, but it was called Damn I Did Something. It was primarily a weekly series usually on Tuesdays, and I suspect it’s where my long, longstanding tradition of being our regular Tuesday Top Commenteer has its origins. I know it’s not Tuesday, but tonight seems like a great night to resurrect the #DIDS tag. While I’ll share something else below the fold, as we grab a beverage and remind ourselves how each and every one of us can contribute to Top Comments, let me say Damn, I Did Something! I am hosting Monday Night Top Comments!

I mentioned it briefly in the comments of John Webb’s diary last night, but here’s the fuller story:
As I’ve gotten increasingly active in local politics, I’ve done a lot. I’ve organized paper turfs for canvassers (before the minivan app became almost universal, and even now we have folks who prefer paper). I’ve had phone banks in my dining room, been a call-time manager, and dropped more lit than I can count.
I have never knocked doors. Ever. For all I come off as an extrovert, knocking on a door and talking to someone about a candidate, even one I passionately support, was terrifying.
Then a local candidate for City Council messaged me Saturday morning: would you PLEASE consider taking just one turf, please? And knowing how much she needed me to, and how much I love and support this candidate, I said yes. (Disclaimer: it may also have been pre-coffee)
So on Sunday I screwed up my courage, grabbed lit, and went out in the gorgeous afternoon to my first door. And knocked, and… well, no one was home. So I left lit, and went on to the next house. Where I SAW someone upstairs peeking, but they would not come down. Umm, ok, I didn’t think I looked scary but when a bluehaired lady in a green canvas jacket with a campaign pin on knocks, I guess it could be early trick-or-treat?
It took two more doors before I got an Actual Person, and she was polite as I gave my spiel, and took my lit. She was noncommital, so I truthfully scored her a 3 and then went to my car to hyperventilate a bit. I DID IT!!!! I TALKED TO A VOTER AND LIVED!!!!
30 doors, and about 75% were either not home (did I mention gorgeous weather on a Sunday afternoon?) and the others were noncommittal. I’m still proud even if I didnt’ come back with an appful of 1’s.
