Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another.Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
If the weather is keeping you inside and you are looking for something to watch, I have a couple of suggestions for you — and I would love to hear yours!
Looking for something funny and light — with good stories and stunning scenery? Britbox has just the thing for you, Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators. Set in Stratford upon Avon and full of picturesque Tudor settings, this modern day cozy mystery follows Frank Hathaway, a disheveled former police inspector, who is joined in the first episode by Luella (“Lu”) Shakespeare, a hairdresser with a really good memory for details and an extremely perceptive nature. Now, the show is touted as featuring a detective duo — but actually there is a well balanced trio. Frank’s office is managed by a young, RADA trained (but between-roles) actor named Sebastian Brudenell who often goes undercover in disguise for the firm. And he is really, really good at it. Whether Sebastian assumes the role of spotty-faced computer technician, nerdy nursing home caregiver, posh boy, Goth teenager, or transvestite, he makes it all look effortless.
This show is so good, I am watching it for the third time. Srsly. Oh, and for lovers of the Bard, there are Shakespeare references (both hidden and not so hidden) sprinkled throughout — and Sebastian is wont to drop a quote here and there.
Sometimes one is in the mood for something more reality based. On Acorn as well as Amazon Prime, there is a fascinating show about a rare dog breed that almost became extinct, the Welsh Sheepdog. This working dog had been used in Wales since time immemorial to herd not just sheep but cattle and other animals but was almost lost due to interbreeding with Border Collies. It has taken a dedicated effort to bring a population of only eighty dogs has to about two thousand today. Watching this, you learn about the training of working dogs, what makes a breed a breed, and see what genetic studies are being done on the dogs. Oh, and there are adorable puppies!
Please share what you are watching! How has your day been? What are your weekend plans — and what’s for dinner? This is an open thread.
