The occupier of the Oval Office announced Friday that he's going to withdraw his nomination of Ron Vitiello, his choice to be the permanent director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, because he now wants to go in a "tougher direction."
"We're going in a little different direction," Trump told reporters Friday morning. "Ron's a good man, but we're going in a tougher direction. We want to go in a tougher direction." Vitiello is currently ICE deputy director. His confirmation "has encountered hold-ups due to controversies over his former social media posts and opposition from the agency’s union," but he'd cleared one committee before this announcement from Trump that he's now out.
Apparently ripping families apart and putting babies in cages is inadequately "tough" for Trump. It's hard to know what he has in mind for the future, or indeed whom he will tap for the position. Maybe he'll stay true to form and just put Mick Mulvaney in charge of ICE as "acting" director.
