I love to poke around on lists, and have learned the hard way that all lists are not created equal, when it comes to veracity. One of the trustworthy sites is On This Day. com which does get things right. So I am pretty confident in telling you that on this date in:
1214 The University of Oxford receives its charter. I once lived not far from Oxford, and thought it was one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen! They call it the City of Dreaming Spires….and it is!
1631, The sack of Baltimore: the Irish village of Baltimore is attacked by Algerian pirates! (For a second there, I thought they meant the Bawlmer where I was born! Although the name Baltimore is an anglicisation of the Irish Baile an Tí Mhóir meaning "town of the big house", the Irish-language name for Baltimore is that of the O'Driscoll castle, Dún na Séad or Dunashad ("fort of the jewels").
Speaking of Baltimore…..in 1970, Baltimore Oriole's Brooks Robinson get his 2,000 career hit, a 3 run HR.
