Can you lose what you never had?
On November 7, 2012, the day Mitt Romney strapped his dog to the roof of his car and rode off into the sunset, I thought, “Now there goes a compassionate Republican. You know, sort of. Compared to the rest, I suppose.”
He wasn’t overtly evil or completely self-absorbed, anyway — as dozens of dead-person baptisms proved.
So the point is that Republicans used to at least give lip service to kindness and compassion instead of viewing those qualities as the exclusive bailiwick of weaklings and fools.
And then came Donald Trump.
He hates compassion, and he makes no bones about it. And this upsets the old guard — as it should. Because, you know, their wanton cruelty was supposed to be a well-kept secret.
Stuart Stevens is a veteran campaign consultant who, perhaps most notably, was a leading strategist for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign.
And he appears to believe his party has gone down a hellhole it may not be able to escape from:
On the day a swarm of ICE raids is poised to rip hundreds of families apart, we need more Republicans to step up and make themselves heard. But few will, because if there are two things Republicans hate more than kindness and compassion, it’s integrity and bravery.
