A group of Democratic senators, led by Chuck Schumer were at a Texas detention facility at the end of last week, reporting "awful" conditions. Sen. Brian Schatz, a Democrat representing Hawaii who was also there, described in a series of tweets the "overcrowded quarters," "harsh odors," concluding "The cruelty is the point and it comes from the most powerful person in the world."
That person got around to responding to the senators Sunday night, tweeting that Schumer "has finally gone to the Southern Border with some Democrat [sic] Senators." (Numerous Democratic senators have already made the trip over the past several weeks, finally shaming Vice President Pence and a handful of Republicans into their own trip last week.) Trump apparently saw Schumer's reaction to the visits. "It's been a very, very difficult day,” Schumer told reporters. "To see these people, particularly the children, treated in such inhumane conditions, just tears at your heartstrings and really makes you feel awful."
Trump responded "Based on the comments made by Senator Schumer, he must have seen how dangerous & bad for our Country the Border is. It is not a 'manufactured crisis,' as the Fake News Media & their Democrat [sic] partners tried to portray. He said he wants to meet. I will set up a meeting ASAP!"
What Trump wants to achieve by that is a mystery. Probably he'd like to see if he can play Schumer against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as he tries to place blame on Democrats for conditions at the border because they won't support his white supremacist immigration plans.
