Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Please do not attack Democratic candidates or drag primary fights into our community.
Once a month, I get to see a naturopath at Providence's Integrative Medicine Center for routine care. The Integrative Medicine Center is housed in the hospital’s Cancer Tower because most of what they do there is in support of people undergoing cancer treatment. Me, I’m just seeking to prevent cancer — as aren’t we all to whatever extent we can? Well, I’ve been going to the Integrative Medicine Center for a couple years now — and every month I’ve walked by a display of this book (written by one of the doctors who founded Providence’s Integrative Medicine Center) and never bought it. This Spring, I finally got the book and am so glad I did.
You may not see this book in stores if you are not in Portland, OR. If you are not in Portland, no worries, you can always buy it by mail from Powell’s: Good Food, Great Medicine by Miles Hassell, M.D. and Mea Hassell.
why I like this book
- I can open it anywhere and find some interesting piece of information I didn’t know I needed to know — but do.
- There are lots of suggestions for getting more veggies and whole grains into the diet.
- Everything I have made from the book so far has been delicious.
- The ingredients are not hard to source — and the good doctor gives shopping tips.
- Since I am cooking for a diabetic and a heart patient (my sister), I am always looking for ways to feed her healthy food that I will also enjoy — and this book does that.
- The author says, in his opinion, chocolate should be part of the Mediterranean Diet — so you know he’s alright! (Of course, you know he’s referring to the high cacao, lower sugar dark variety.)
My favorite recipes so far have been the Red Lentil Soup, Millet Pudding, chicken salad, and Tuna and White Bean Salad with Fennel.
I love this book even though there are no Instant Pot recipes in it. That should tell you something.
