Acting Department of Homeland Security chief Kevin McAleenan says that he has ordered an immediate investigation into the "disturbing & inexcusable social media activity that allegedly includes active Border Patrol personnel." He added, "They do not represent the men and women of the Border Patrol or @DHSgov."
This follows the head of U.S. Border Patrol Carla Provost's promise that any "employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable," in an as-of-yet-unspecified way. And that follows revelations by ProPublica of a Facebook group of well over 9,000 Border Patrol agents who post violently racist and misogynist things.
According to one Border Patrol agent, who talked to CNN anonymously, "being derogatory is part of the CBP culture." In an on-camera interview, with his voice altered and identity concealed, the agent, who, according to CNN, "said he's had enough," talked about his supervisor "making fun" of dead immigrants.
"That, what difference does it make? It's just another life. He made a comment also regarding running over illegals and I'm like, 'You cannot run over people.'" That's coming from his supervisor, the person in charge of agents. Which suggests, contra McAleenan's assertion, that these assholes represent way too many of the men and women in the Border Patrol.
It might help things were Trump to appoint an actual, real, accountable director of Homeland Security, but given the general caliber of his Cabinet, probably not.
