I used to smoke and I only quit because I was an NCI post-doctoral fellow in Texas and I worked across from one of the biggest and best cancer centers in the US….MD Anderson.
I smoked for about 24 years and quit back in 2008...and still to this day, even though I now suffer from COPD and Asthma, there are times I would love to have a smoke.
My post-doc work was in the area of tobacco cessation so I quit smoking. When I did the rate of tobacco use (Smoking, smokeless tobacco, etc) was high… so I just was interested in the rate of smoking and tobacco use here in the US.
As of 2017 the rate of adults in the US that smoked had fallen to 14 percent. Great news, I agree.
But….
While cigarettes are the most common form of tobacco used, the press release noted that other forms of tobacco are also used widely, including e-cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, water pipes and hookahs. In total, about 47 million people in the U.S. use tobacco products.
So well we have made inroads into decreasing tobacco use, people still smoke.
That is the background why I asked tonight's question.
