Trump, in his everlasting and monumental ignorance, will continue to promote his nationalistic “solutions” to a global problem. No amount of shutting down borders will end this crisis for the United States.
I was fortunate to view two incredibly insightful and informative webinars today, the first (only available online until April 17 and well worth watching) from noted Northwestern University economist Sérgio Rebelo, and the second (sorry, subscription event, no video) from University of Chicago economist Raghuram Rajan, the former Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund, on ways forward as we emerge from the pandemic. Both of these experts concluded their presentations by stressing the global nature of the problem, and the need for global cooperation to stem the damage and restart growth.
Joe Biden’s piece in today’s New York Times, Joe Biden: My Plan to Safely Reopen America, fails to even mention global cooperation as part of his plan to get America back to work. That is an oversight that needs to be corrected.
We will not succeed as a nation in this battle without working hand-in-hand with every nation on the planet, as The New York Times pointed out this evening in an editorial. Trump’s ignorant nationalism will doom us to suffer wave after wave of destruction from this virus, giving Biden an opportunity to show just how small Trump is, both in intellect and in vision.
This is a global crisis that demands global solutions.
Joe, it’s time to show the world what global leadership looks like. This is your — and our — opportunity.
