The OH Supreme Court ordered a proposed Voting rights ballot issue be considered as a single measure and not split into 4 separate issues as the state GOP SOS and Ballot Board had ruled. 4 Republican judges joined 2 Democratic judges in a 6-1 decision. “Under the initial proposal, Ohioans would automatically be registered to vote upon applying for or renewing a driver’s license or other state-issued ID. It also would allow eligible Ohioans to register to vote and cast a ballot on the same day throughout the early voting period. This would reinstate and expand what previously was referred to as “Golden Week,” which the Republican-controlled state legislature eliminated in 2014.” In addition, it contains language ensuring disabled Ohioans have “full and equal access to register to vote and to voting” and requiring a post-election audit for accuracy.
If the proposed issue was forced to split into 4 separate issues 4 times as many signatures would have been needed to get them on the Nov Ballot and make it harder to pass all 4 issues.
”Ohioans for Secure and Fair Elections” will now have to gather 422,958 signatures from registered voters in 44 of 88 counties- a tough challenge when the current pandemic will make such efforts even more difficult.
The OH SOS Frank LaRose who heads the state’s ballot board was “disappointed” in the decision but will respect it.
