Experience Not Required
Way back in 2014 I wrote a Kitchen Table about things I had never done but everybody has done. That was prompted by my earlier admission that I have never used a ATM. The list (but not the only possible list) looked like this:
Went to Disneyland. Played a video game. Load a dishwasher.
Rode a horse. ✓ Fired a gun ✓ Sang at a Karaoke.
Flew in a helicopter. ✓ Used a chainsaw ✓ Used an outhouse ✓
Own a car ✓ Shoveled snow ✓ Visited Hawaii.
Ran for public office. Enjoyed any Rap music. Planted a tree. ✓
Fired from a job. Have/had a pet. ✓ Act in a play post-HS.
Then I revisited this in 2019, What have you never done? We have visited Hawaii and I ran for office, though only for our HOA board.
Now we are all in quarantine. This gives rise to new insight on doing new and different things, many of which you never thought you’d do:
Wearing a mask in public. √ Sheltering in place √ Washing wine bottles √
Hoarding toilet paper Howling at 8:00 Communication via Zoom √
Order takeout from restaurants (we’ve done it more in the last 2 weeks than
in the previous 80 years) √
Congratulating oneself for successfully grocery shopping √√
Make sourdough bread Jigsaw Puzzles Exercise (aaaaaack)
I still haven’t used an ATM but Mrs. side pocket does, because banks are closed.√
Everyone approaches quarantine in their own way. What realms of the heretofore unknown have you explored? There’s always a first time, and it’s now.

In other quarantine news, we are finding that wines are going on sale around here. In many cases (heh) they are up to 50% off. We usually buy an inexpensive Chardonnay for quotidian consumption but we're been upgrading. It will be difficult to go back, I suspect.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Please do not attack Democratic candidates or drag primary fights into our community. |
