Though the news is—understandably—focused on the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 presidential election is still only months away. Former vice president Joe Biden is, at this point, the presumptive nominee for the Democratic party who will face Donald Trump in November. Biden has racked up a series of important endorsements lately, including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and California Sen. Kamala Harris. Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has joined in with a video endorsement released Monday morning, saying Biden “knows how to get the job done.”
The California Democrat referenced Biden’s history and experience as former president Barack Obama’s vice president, including in economic recovery, the Affordable Care Act, and cancer research, among other highlights. “When our nation faced the great recession, it was Joe Biden who led the implementation and accountability of the recovery act, helping create and save millions of jobs,” the speaker said in the video posted to her Twitter account.
In the video, Pelosi says Biden brings “hope and courage, values, authenticity and integrity.” Biden will be a “voice of reason and resilience” as the nation faces a global pandemic, she argued. She also praised Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, for supporting veterans and service members.
Unsurprisingly, the speaker of the House also pointed out the former vice president’s “empathy, grace, and courage” when he was speaking with the families of those lost to gun violence. Though the speaker doesn’t say this, it’s worth remembering that while Biden is far more moderate than former rivals Sen. Warren or Sen. Sanders, his policy ideas on gun reform are considerable and certainly progressive.
“With so much at stake, we need the enthusiasm, invigoration and participation of all Americans—up and down the ballot, and across the country,” Pelosi added. “With a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, we will deliver bold progress for the people when we have President Joe Biden.”
Here’s that video.
