As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
Good Morning my friends. Any of you who know me well, know that I do not, can not read in print. This is not to say that I do not know how, but that I can not see. Thus I have learned, and maintained a joy, in being read to. Throughout my life, I have progressed from pestering parents, siblings and friends to read to me, to enjoying story records on vinyl, to books on tapes and CD, books on pc and kindle, thanks to text to speech software, and of course, most recently, books from audible.com.
In the last several months, audible has begun giving their members a free selection from their audible original collection each month, above and beyond their allotted credits each month. These, have turned out to be a mixed grab bag of unexpected treasures.
In the last week, I have read Bluebird Memories. By the Rap Artist Common. This, is a sort of musical and spoken letter, to the artist’s father, and was unexpectedly good, even to someone who as a rule has very little taste for most rap music. I also read Bella, Bella. A humorous one person play, read by the author, Harvey Feirstien. There was also, Stories of a Lifetime written and performed by Dan Rather, a man who I have admired since I was in Jr. High School <middle school to the youngsters in the crowd>. My favorite of the lot however, was by far, Phreaks. This is an audio drama written by Mathew Derby, and performed by a full cast of very talented actors. This piece, tells the story of a group of old school hackers and phone phreaks, going against a giant of the early telecom industry, given far too much power, and a company desperate to hide its sins.
Each of these was an unexpected pleasure, that I will no doubt go back to, time and again. I would gladly recommend any of these to someone looking for a good, short read. My Question though, is this. What are you reading?:)
