A victory for voters in Kentucky

Here’s just a short diary detailing some good news coming out of Kentucky—I just wanted to get this information out there since I didn’t see it posted by anyone else.

Kentucky has traditionally been a state that only allows voters to cast their ballot on election day unless you have an excuse such as military service or illness. Thanks to our Democratic governor Andy Beshear, Kentuckians will have the ability to vote absentee this election. 

Within one week, an online portal will become available that will allow people to sign up for an absentee ballot. You only need to cite concern about spreading or contracting COVID-19 in order to be eligible. According to the article linked above, you will have until October 9th to request an absentee ballot on the website. 

Drop boxes will also be made available for those who are worried about their ballot being lost or delivered late by the postal service. County clerks will decide where there are located in their counties. Woot! 

In addition, early voting will be made available to all Kentucky voters starting October 13—and it will be required to be open 6 days a week, with at least 4 hours available on Saturday. 

Also of great importance is the fact that people who could not get an ID because the county clerk’s office was closed or because they were afraid of contracting COVID-19, will be able to sign a document explaining their concern, and cast their ballot.
