As the Democratic led House returns to counter Trump’s malicious assault on the post office, it should also finally undo the cancer that has eaten at the United Postal Services finances for over a decade.
In 2006, Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) which required the creation of a $72 billion fund to pay for the cost of its post-retirement health care costs, 75 years into the future.
Such a burden applies to no other federal agency or private corporation. This unprecedented and unnecessary financial burden created an imaginary financial “crisis” that has been used to justify harmful service cuts and calls for postal privatization.
With attention coalescing around Trump’s assault on Democracy through postal service cuts, this is the best time to undo this past harm.
