Deseret News - College football 2020: Here’s what each conference has decided ... so far
Washington Post - Which college football teams and conferences have canceled?
NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NCCJA (junior colleges) and the NAIA have cancelled fall sports or moved fall sports to the spring. The FCS (Division I — Football Championship Subdivision) playoff has been cancelled for this fall.
In the FBS (Division I — Football Bowl Subdivision), the Big Ten, PAC-12, MAC, Mountain West have cancelled or postponed Fall sports. The SEC, Big 12, ACC, Sun Belt, Conference USA and AAC are playing. While the FBS is split on playing, hundreds of teams from lower divisions will not be playing.
But this diary isn’t really about football.
Trump is going to expect to get a bump from college football. I’m seeing conservatives having screaming fits because “leftist extremists” took away their football. Trump’s going to run with that. From the beginning of this pandemic, Trump has been all-in that it is no big deal, that we should just go on with our lives, and that the pandemic would just go away on its own.
Trump may get a football bump. People will see football being played on TV, and Trump is certainly going to gloat. But if that happens, don’t panic. The other shoe will drop. There will be increased infections as a result, and many of the teams that will still be playing will be in the areas where COVID-19 infections are the worst. The Big Ten was in a much better position to play football than the SEC was. I’m not wishing for any of this to happen, it’s just what is most likely. It may not be possible to even finish the season.
Again, Trump may get a bump from college football, but it is likely to be short-lived as it leads to increased outbreaks.
