Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-), so we can credit you with the find!
Good evening. I know our convention is starting. By all means put your energy and attention there! But, if you have a few moments (or if, like me, you’re happy multi-tasking), here is a Top Comments diary you can read.
I got to meet a school friend of my sister’s when she was an attorney for a local municipality. She was attending a minor Democratic organization meeting with me and a few others.
I should give some context. Debra was my sister’s upper-class ‘Big Sister’ at university in Charleston many years ago, so I was aware of who she was. She is a small black woman, perhaps five feet tall, fit, with a huge smile and the courage of a lion. When I say that she brings big energy, it is no exaggeration at all. She projects the confidence of a human being who has never been intimidated by anything or anyone in her entire life. I am a believer.
At the meeting I attended with her, the discussion moved to consideration of roles we would take in the campaign.
There was a nice woman there. She had been quiet during most of the discussion. When it came to the roles, she was quite honest. She preferred clerical or administrative work, without public contact. She said - I give her credit for this - that she did not deal well with conflict.
I am sure that she did not mean to offend the woman, did not mean to be insensitive, but Debra just started laughing.
As a black female lawyer, Debra has dealt with conflict ALL of her life. There is nothing on earth that scares her less, and it is likely that very little in her life is free from it.
Of course, the exchange intrigued me because I am not fan of conflict, either. I have no particular fear of it. I don’t run from it or avoid it. I have no particular fear of people, either. I like people (most people). I have campaigned door to door, I have made phone calls as a campaign activity. That I am not doing it now is due more to a personal hearing handicap than to Covid. Simply, even without masks to block lip-reading cues and to muffle words, I worry about missing things in conversation.
But, like the woman who made Debra laugh, I am happy to make significant contribution to Democratic campaigns that don’t involve conflict. (I love the letter writing campaigns like Vote Forward! Daily Kos has been pushing these, an excellent enterprise, particularly in the era of Covid, so I signed up! Please join if it works for you!)
The reason I thought of Debra a few days ago was because our fine candidate picked Kamala Harris as his vice-president-to-be.
Kamala Harris isn’t afraid, either. She has dealt with conflict all of her life, too. She is STRONG. And she, too, has the spirit and courage of a lion.
Debra and Kamala are two of the people I’d pick first when going into this (or perhaps any!) battle. I think you feel the same.
And, if you missed it, in his rec-list diary late Saturday, SemDem said essentially the same (about Senator Harris, anyway!).
Thanks for reading.
On to tonight’s comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? From Dunvegan:
I’d like to nominate this comment by War Horse, from teacherken’s New Lincoln Project ad - a bio piece on Biden.
