I don’t have much information on this — picked up on it from a comment thread in the Washington Post where I was reading about the convention. But apparently Putin’s primary opponent Alexei Navalny drank poison and fell ill while on a plane and is now in intensive care.
From BBC,
The anti-corruption campaigner fell ill during a flight and the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk, Kira Yarmysh said on Twitter.
She said they suspect Mr Navalny was poisoned by something mixed in his tea. A hospital has confirmed his admission.
Mr Navalny, 44, is a staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin.
In June he described a vote on constitutional reforms as a "coup" and a "violation of the constitution". The reforms allow Mr Putin to serve another two terms in office.

If we don’t get rid of Trump god help us. He’s already declaring that he should get at least 3 terms, due to Obama having “spied” on his campaign, etc, and is attempting to ratf*ck the election by crippling USPS and weaponizing the coronavirus.
HRC was routinely threatened by Trump and his supporters at rallies. Remember “lock her up?” He wasn’t kidding but he didn’t have enough power or moxie to do anything about it, and there were cooler heads in his Cabinet, etc.
But since he was impeached but not removed, and the last of the sober advisors has gone, he’s unhinged and out of control and has Barr for an enabler/enforcer and McConnell, craven and corrupt, won’t stand up for the people.
I fear that a second-term Trump would go after the press. He would attack Obama, Biden, HRC and eventually he would come after ordinary people who don’t adore him sufficiently.
It’s tempting to think oh it’s not a big deal, just another election, maybe Biden isn’t who I really like, etc.
Not this time. This time, we’d all better vote. We’d better drag our friends, our relatives, the moderate Republican down the street to the polls. If the mail is f*cked up we go in person if we have to crawl through broken glass in a blizzard of coronavirus droplets.
When no less than Mr. Cool, Barack Obama sounds the alarm about the future of our democracy it is time to get very, very worried and very, very determined.
