One of my friends and I decided to meet up in Corte Madera for lunch Tuesday at the recently opened Amy’s Drive Through. We arrived at about the same time. There were about 30 cars already queued up to order from Amy’s organic veggie menu, which features many of the products she sells in grocery stores around the country. We’d been waiting for over a year for them to open a franchise in Corte Madera so we wouldn’t have to 40-miles up north for a decadent inexpensive lunch.
At that point in time, the fire in the Point Reyes National Seashore was about five acres. Still, I had an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, knowing the wilderness out there is so unreachable to firefighters.
Chief Jason Weber: “We are in unprecedented times…statewide we have never seen this level of drawdown…aircraft, engines, fire crews, all of the tools we use on these fires, there’s great competition across the state and even the western US.” #woodwardfire

The air quality. Once again, as most of you probably know by now, there is a state of emergency here in California due to all the wildfires. Since yesterday morning, there are three or four fires in the Bay Area alone.
My attention is on the Woodward Fire in at the national seashore. As of last reporting, it has burned some 1500 acres and is 0% contained. 1600 structures are in danger. The fire is some four miles from Bolinas and the towns of Bolinas and Dogtown are on evacuation alert. I heard yesterday that there were no aircraft available because they are already being employed elsewhere.
I lived in Bolinas for about 15 years so this strikes close to my heart. My daughter used to ride her horse from Bo to Olema on a path through these very woods. We often hiked the Bear Valley trail and always stopped off en route back from Pt. Reyes to see the Morgan horses at the Visitor’s Center.
Back then, the 1995 Inverness fire was an anomaly. Fire season in California was in the southern part of the state. I can recall driving home over Mt. Tamalpais each day into a cauldron of smoke and worrying about the horses grazing in their paddocks. Natural disasters back then were mostly attributable to massive storm systems and flooding. I remember water trucks parked at the fire station and times when we lost power for days. There was the night when the storm swelled the creek behind my house and deep into the evening my husband and I and our neighbors pulled tree branches and other detritus from the storm out of the water so that it would not flood our property.
When I recall this evening all the folks here at DK whose lives were turned upside down by the California fires over the past few years. My heart breaks. I am truly beginning to believe that California might become uninhabitable.
