There have been so many stories lately about corruption in the North Carolina Republican Party that you may have trouble keeping track of it all.
Don’t worry, friends. Progressives on the ground here in North Cackalack have you covered. Today, I want to present a brief summary of all the recent and ongoing corruption investigations going on in our state — as well as what you can do about it.
1 — Richard Burr, the senior Republican Senator from NC, is under an ongoing FBI investigation into insider trading over COVID. The FBI seized the Senator’s cellphone and Burr stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
2 — Robin Hayes, the most recent chairman of the NCGOP and dean of the state party, plead guilty in the biggest bribery scandal in North Carolina political history. Hayes was state party chair of the NCGOP until just last year.
3 — GOP Congressman Mark Walker was also caught up in the bribery scandal, but Walker managed to avoid charges simply because he passed on the bribes he received to the RNC.
4 — The NCGOP tried to steal a Congressional election — and almost succeeded. The saga of the almost-stolen election in NC’s 9th Congressional District is complicated, but the state party nearly succeeded in rigging it through ballot fraud.
5 — Senate Leader Phil Berger, pictured above, was busted “double-dipping” reimbursements from the state government to personally enrich himself. Berger, the most powerful Republican legislator in North Carolina, improperly helped himself to $72,000 worth of reimbursements and now does not want to pay it back.
6 — State representative David Lewis was indicted just yesterday for embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from his donors. Lewis, who is the architect of the racist, partisan gerrymandering that is the NCGOP’s signature achievement in NC over the last decade, stole the money in such a way that his state party almost certainly knew about it, but said nothing.
You ever find a cockroach in your closet?
If you have, then you know that if you see just a few, that means there are dozens or hundreds hidden away under the floors, in your walls, or down in the basement.
Political corruption works the same way. It requires networks of people all choosing to overlook, ignore or even participate in dirty deeds.
There’s no rehabilitating these people. They just need to be fired. And we have a way to do it.
