I’m very much with Soledad O’Brien on this one: I am so tired of conservative claims on so-called moral values.
FLAG: The overwhelming majority of males in my family...and a few of the females...served in this nation’s armed forces.
A few of them made a career out of being in the Armed Services.
Serving in the Armed Services is not my thing; was never my thing. But all praises and honor to all of ,my relatives who did in all of the nation’s wars going back, at least, to World War II (which is as far as I know)
FAITH: I may be a religious agnostic and a bit of a heathen nowadays but I was raised in the Black church, many of my family members still go to church, and, to this day, I still draw on certain aspects of my upbringing on the regular.
FAMILY: After I left home, it took me awhile to value and to love and, most importantly, to like the family that I didn’t choose.
Being an adult gives me the opportunity to like and to love a family that, to a great degree, I do get to choose.
CHARACTER: Oh yes, I have character. My families have character; lots of it. Positive and negative characteristics, as do we all. I strive to be a better, more...moral, I guess (?), person every day and I fail at it multiple times every day and I keep on striving to be better.
I keep trying to do what little I can to help make the world a little bit of a better place today than I did yesterday.
There’s nothing “conservative” about any of these values.
There certainly are “small-c” conservative aspects of these values even as they exists in my life but I also find myself having to redefine these terms for my own purposes to simply survive...and, hopefully, to pass it on to future generations.
Perhaps Ms. Longwell would deny The Damn Fool the “political conservative” label when it comes to moral values but, certainly, a lot of so-called conservative people can and do claim him as one of their own.
I can’t do it. Too much cognitive dissonance for me (in that respect alone, I might agree with Ms. Longwell).

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
