I was happy to be contacted by our local chapter of Indivisible that the local community would be participating in the national #SavethePostOffice rallies by gathering at our own local P. O. (I hesitate to call the event a “protest,” since we weren’t protesting the USPS, but were instead supporting the USPS in the face of the sabotage that has been done to it under Trump and his Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.) We arrived at 11 AM, and were pleased to see that a respectable number of people had shown up. At our peak, we had about two dozen people—not bad for a town of about 5600. Hubby and I came bearing signs, but we have quite a bit of extra cardboard at home, so we brought that with us, along with markers, allowing those who came without signs to make their own.
Those who showed up spanned the memberships of the local Indivisible chapter, members of the county Democratic Party, and of the local ACLU chapter. I was able to catch up a little bit with people I hadn’t seen in person in months. It was a clear, sunny morning, and got quite hot over the course of the rally. and We got lots of supportive honks and waves from passing cars. We even got a honk from a passing pickup truck that had a “Trump Train” decal on its rear window. Maybe that train is derailed? I was told one of the postal workers came out and told the ralliers “God bless you!”
The rally started leaking as noon approached, and the event was essentially over around half past. One of the local TV stations had cameras there, so we’ll be on the evening news tonight.
So did you show support for your local post office today? If so, what happened? If not, how did you spend the day?
