Meet Benny, my best friend. I take Benny everywhere. I take him to coach football practice with me.

I take him on 5-10 mi walks all around Arlington, Virginia. I take him to the ABC store with me. I even take him on canvass launches with me!

Now I’m a candidate for office and couldn’t think of a better topic to speak about for my second virtual campaign event than the responsible way to buy a companion animal, like Benny.

As best as my wife and I can gather, Benny was originally bought from a puppy mill in Ohio, as are far too many poor souls who unfortunately don’t end up in loving homes.

A puppy mill is an inhumane high-volume dog breeding facility that churns out puppies for profit, ignoring the needs of the pups and their mothers. Dogs from puppy mills are often sick and unsocialized. Puppy mills commonly sell through internet sales, online classified ads, flea markets and pet stores.

Because of a lack of knowledge of the inhumanity of puppy mills and the people who choose to do business with them, far too many elected officials don’t prioritize the needs of our most vulnerable friends. That will not be me.
