It’s been a far more exciting Sunday than I had intended, even for 2020 where every day is a thrilling mix of ‘Biblical Plague’ + ‘New! Improved! Now With More WTF’. Grab an appropriate beverage (I’m saving the bourbon and tequila for watching the RNC next week, so Hard Seltzer and Truly Lemonade it is) and join me underneath the What This Community Diary Series Is For blurb...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
The day started out well — yesterday was Mr. Brillig’s and my 28th Anniversary, so we made pancakes (keto and regular) plus a ton of breakfast meats to keep everyone in the house happy. Mr. Brillig and K1 went out driving (she’s got her permit and is trying to get to the drivers test part asap) and I was relaxing in between sorting through a box of my Mom’s old papers that I’d just unearthed in the attic.
And then K1 texted to say ‘Dad thought he should drive in case it rains hard’ and I looked out. No rain, but it was grey. I remembered I’d left car windows open and shut them. Two minutes later, it was raining. A lot. See the story title graphic and we were that dark red part. And then we lost power.
While Mr. Brillig and K1 drove carefully home through wind, water and hail, I got candles set up, made sure K2 knew not to open the fridge/freezer, and discovered my phone was at 5% charge because of course it was. K1 got home and we strung up sets of little battery-powered string lights I’d forgotten we had, and generally it looked nice and festive as we waited for power.
It finally came back on a little while ago, meaning while I get to bring you the Tops tonight, I did NOT have time to pen a longer, more insightful diary. However, now is a perfect time to remind everyone to be prepared for whatever Weather or Natural Events occur in your area. Friends living in hurricane areas know how to prepare for one (or because 2020, a socially distanced pair). Folks living in fire or earthquake zones know to keep a go-bag by the door with what you need to grab in a hurry. What is YOUR emergency preparedness status, and what do you know how to do without even thinking about it that others who don’t live in your area might not? Share your wisdom in the comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? From Eyesbright:
Ahianne came up with a clever reply to my comment about a serial troll. From Stephen Wolf’s Voting Rights Roundup: Judge tosses GOP's deceptive summary of measure to gut redistricting reform.
From belinda ridgewood:
In Chitown Kev's Sunday Pundit Roundup this morning, he interleaved tweets in memory of Covid-19 victims with his pundit commentary. When I circled back late in the day to look for something in the thread, I found this pair of moving comments
by Gaelsdottir mourning these people who, by rights, should be alive. I don't think City of New Orleans ever made me cry before.
