Sen. Lindsey Graham is a big deal in Washington. He is chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, a media-savvy Republican leader and golf partner of President Trump. Graham commands attention and wields influence on Capitol Hill on everything from national defense to confirmation of judges.
But back home in South Carolina, the Republican is, surprisingly, politically vulnerable. He's facing a well-funded Democrat, Jaime Harrison, who has dominated the airwaves with ads about his life story of overcoming poverty. He's painted Graham as a politician "living large" while South Carolinians suffer. "What happened to Lindsey Graham?" one ad says.
The rise of a viable Democratic challenger, Graham's high-profile embrace of Trump, the COVID-19 crisis and Black Lives Matter unrest have all combined to create a perfect storm. Graham is in his toughest fight yet to win reelection, according to South Carolina political experts.
Conservative outlets should take Harrison seriously. Even the Cook Political Report had to downgrade Graham’s race again:
The Cook Political Report on Monday shifted its outlook for the South Carolina Senate race toward Democrat Jaime Harrison, bringing Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) reelection bid into more competitive territory.
The nonpartisan election handicapper moved the race from its "likely" Republican column into the "lean" Republican column. That means that Graham still has the advantage, but his seat has come into play for Democrats.
A handful of factors contributed to the rating change. Harrison has nearly matched Graham dollar for dollar in fundraising this cycle, raking in $29 million to the GOP incumbent’s $30.9 million.
