She says: “I think Trump must be mentally ill; I know he’s crazy.” She lives in rural Pennsylvania.
Then she says: “But maybe he’s the only one who can stand up to the looting and violence...”
And I throw up my arms. An intelligent friend, well educated, but still a victim of the images Trump and Fox flash again and again on TV: burning buildings, violent agitators.
“At first I sympathized with the Black Lives Matter protesters,” she says, “but now they are overdoing it...”
I try to explain: These ad clips are but a few very localized moments ; while 99 % of the city goes about it’s regular business. And you’ve never heard Biden condone or promote any of this. Trump doesn’t show you the vast majority of peaceful protesters; instead he gets a video op of the exception and makes you think it’s widespread. He claims there is no legitimate protest movement; it’s all anarchy and lawlessness.
There is no penalty these days for lying.
It reminds me of Bush voters in the early 2000’s who in the midwest, feared that the terrorists were intent on blowing up their small suburban mall.
How do we counter this conditioning, which we know is a lie?
There was Rudy Guliani and others at the RNC, shouting at America that this “violence” will come to your suburban doorsteps. When has it ever?
How should Joe Biden be taking this on? I hope he has a good strategy because these overblown fear images are potent to far flung suburbanites who tend to fear the cities in the best of times.
