This rant is brought to you by several clueless comments in Denise Oliver Velez’s awesome diary: Nina Simone was blunt about hand-wringers advising Black folks to 'go slow'.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry over far too many comments requesting the end of the predominantly peaceful BLM protests because incidents of late-night property damage is “counter-productive.”
Worse – a couple of comments made the disingenuous straw man argument that Denise’s rejection of those asking for the end of the BLM protests meant she was somehow endorsing the destruction of property.
These types of odious thought farts completely dismiss the REASON we are protesting: racist cops are killing unarmed Black people at alarming rates.
I have to say it: if you’re putting the value of property above protesting against the institutionalized, sanctioned murder of Black people by cops, some soul searching is required.
To even suggest the BLM protesters should go home and ‘go slow,’ as some sort of strategy to win “independent voters” and “moderate republicans,” it’s not only a bone-deep insult to our Black brothers and sisters, it’s outright STUPID.
Stupid because trump will take credit for “ending the riots.”
You’re asking the BLM movement to stand down which is exactly what trump and his minions want.
No.
Keep going, keep going, right up to election day.
Keep telling trump and company we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore.
If property is damaged in the process – so be it.
A human life is priceless.
How can you even suggest that broken windows or even looting “looks bad” for “our” side.
How bad does it look compared to video of a young Black father getting shot in the back seven times?
How bad does it look compared to video of another Black father getting the life choked out of him by a cop’s knee?
And so on and so on and so on.
There’s a quote going around the net that’s been incorrectly attributed to Thomas Jefferson. Frankly I don’t care who said it because it rings true.
When The People Fear The Government, There Is Tyranny. When The Government Fears The People, There Is Liberty.
Now is not the time to stand down.
