Today we got the sad news that Tom Sever the Franchise of the NY Mets Aka Tom Terrific has passed away at the age of 75 in his sleep from Levy body dementia and COVID 19. He is survived by his wife,Nancy, daughters Sarah and Anne, and 4 Grandsons.
Anyone who lived in the 60’s would remember Tom and the 1969 Miracle Mets who beat the big, bad Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. In his career Tom spent 12 ears with the Mets until that ogre, M Donald Grant traded him to the Cincinnati Reds. In what was called “Midnight Massacare” After a bitter contract dispute. In his career Tom Terrific won the Cy Young Award 3 times, was 12 times elected to the All Stars, was 5 times a 20 game winner, and won 311 games over a 20 year career. his number 41 was retired by the METS and when they moved out of Shea Stadium on into Citifields the address of the 7 block stretch outside the Stadium was changed to 41 SEVER WAY.
As a Brooklyn girl who grew up with baseball and a Met fan from the first pitch in their first game 7 years before Tom, I am very saddened by his death sine part of my teenage and young adult days are gone.
RIP Tom Terrific and thank you for all those beautiful years you gave us with our wonderful New York Mets.
