Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post, from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.
This series was conceived as a haven where folks can drop in to share conversation, ideas, weather reports, and music. Feel free to leave a note, comment, picture, or tune. As always the diarist gets to sleep in, and may show up long after the post is published. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug.
Pull up a chair, get your cup of tea, coffee, or other favorite morning beverage and join us for a neighborly start to the day ahead.
Last Wednesday, someone in the dRump campaign thought it would be a good idea to steal the Animals’ classic “House of the Rising Sun” and play it at a Wilmington, North Carolina airport as hisself arrived for an appearance. The song’s misuse was later disseminated on social media.
That’s not all. The Animals’ 1964 hit song has been played at other Trump rallies.
The Animals’ lead singer, Eric Burdon, responded to Trump’s use of “House of the Rising Sun” in a sharply worded statement. He not only criticized the Occupant, but then gave a resounding endorsement to the Biden/Harris ticket.
Eric Burdon’s statement read as follows:
“Even though nobody asked my permission, I wasn’t surprised to learn that Trump used House of the Rising Sun for his rally the other day. A tale of sin and misery set in a brothel suits him so perfectly! Far more appropriate for this time in our history might be.”
Eric Burdon added:
“#WeGottaGetOutofThisPlace. This is my answer #vote #saveourdemocracy #bidenharris2020.”
This is the original video version of the Animals’ big hit:
We all grow older. This is the Animals in a 2011 reunion. It is classic. All the voices are not only older, they are mature. Eric Burdon is now 79 years old and still performing. House of the Rising Sun begins at 3:08 in the video.
Wednesday Lagniappe:
Another great New Orleans song, St. James Infirmary. This is The Late Show’s beloved musical genius, John Batiste:
